This model is a biallelic deletion of the Chrna7 gene, part a family of ligand-gated ion channels that mediate fast signal transmission at synapses. Disruptions of this gene have been shown to be involved in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and schizophrenia.
The Chrna7 Knockout Rat model was originally created at SAGE Labs, Inc. in St. Louis, MO and distributed out of the Boyertown, PA facility. The line continues to be maintained through the original SAGE Labs animal inventory acquired by Envigo, then Envigo was acquired by Inotiv in 2021.
